  • When was the school founded? The first founding class was in 1946.

  • What is the mission of the institution? Equipped with the most technologically advanced facilities located on a university campus, the college is dedicated to safeguarding public health by studying emerging infectious diseases that affect both animal and human health.

  • Do they have any special programs? They have the UGA college of veterinary medicine international program, they have the Georgia veterinary scholars, and student ambassadors program.

  • Do they have any special facilities? Yes, the poultry diagnostic and research center, veterinary medicine teaching hospital, and southeastern cooperative wildlife disease center. These are among the best centers in these areas in the nation. There is also the UGA veterinary teaching hospital and the diagnostic labs in Athens and Tifton.

  1. What are some student activities? They have such on campus organizations as AABP, AAEP, animal welfare club, canine club, LGVMA, pathheads, SCAVMA, shelter medicine club, alpha psi, omega tau sigma, SAGA. There are also opportunities for leadership and research at the University. You can also become involved with other volunteer, honors, academic, or social organizations around the general campus.

  • What professional development do they offer graduates? There are many resources out there for veterinarians at Georgia, such as conferences. They held the 50th annual veterinary conference and alumni weekend this past year, they have a practical veterinary dentistry seminar, arthroscopy, advanced laparoscopy….list goes on. They also have employment centers and websites meant to help their alumni obtain positions.

  • What academic support programs do they have? They have the program educational resources available for students which is a ground breaking in-house graphics arts firm. They have counseling, financial aid help, testing centers, tutoring help.

  • Do they have interviews? Yes, they have an interview but it is over the phone. The admissions committee also call and interview one or more of hte candidate's references.

  • Are AP credits accepted? Yes, they accept AP credit as long as it appears on the official college transcrips and is equivalent to the appropriate college-level coursework.

Subjective Review Components

- Georgia doesn't have the usual split of varying components. Instead they give a general thought about the application process. They state that a successful applicant will be a well-rounded student. Applicants should have a minimum of 250 hours of veterinary experience, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and evidence of leadership potential and community service. 

- The selection process involved meeting the basic requirements of having above a 3.0 GPA with a GRE combined score above 308. 

- After that they further evaluate the applicant submitted through the VMCAS and supplemental, which is done by three UGA College of Veterinary Medicine faculty members. Phone interviews are then done after that. 

 

Tuition and Fees
  • In-state tuition = $17,720

 

  • Out-of-state tuition = $44,320

 

  • Residency status options = You can do a reviewing petitions for in-state residency. UGA CVM considers each student's situation as unique, and so there are no universal formulas.

 

​Funding Options​
  • Grants-in-aid - There are pell grants on the national level available for needy students, along with state grants and grants provided through the university and donors.

 

  • Fellowships - There are different fellowships in the departments in the university. There are varying requirements for each fellowship, for example the following fellowship needs to be a MS or PhD candidate. The Department of Infectious Diseases provides fellowships to US citizens who are accepted into the program. Currently, the fellowships include an annual stipend (ranging from $22,409 to $25,339 for MS and PhD candidates, respectively) and a tuition waiver.

 

  • Scholarships - The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia provides many opportunities for students to receive scholarships throughout their four years of veterinary medical education. Each academic year, enrolled DVM students will be strongly encouraged to complete the CVM scholarship application, which will allow them to be considered for the bulk of the scholarship monies available. Students MUST complete this form to qualify for all of our CVM internal scholarships. n addition, there are several external scholarships available throughout the academic year. These are posted on this website, in addition to students being notified by email. Criteria set forth by the donors, information about each scholarship, and instructions regarding how to apply are described at this site.

 

  • Assistantships - The College of Veterinary Medicine maintains a list of jobs and externships organized by state. For specific information please contact the institution posting the position. For other job opportunities across the U.S., please check out the AVMA Jobs Web site. The GVMA Career Center is partnered with the Veterinary Career Network, and is another great, nation-wide source of jobs for veterinarians.

 

  • Military Funding - The U.S. Army offers a variety of scholarships for veterinary students. If you are interested in the military, they will pay for your entire tuition in exchange for four years of service as a veterinarian. They also pay for all of your books/fees and you get a $1907 per month stipend. Once you start school you are a Second Lieutenant and after you graduate you are promoted to a Captain.
