****It was very difficult to find information on this veterinary school. Much of the information they had on their website was related undergraduate school and this made it very hard to discern the information. Once I found the veterinary schools "main page" they had online the very basics you can find here and nothing more in-depth such as statistics or the review process. Background Information

  • When was the school founded? The School of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1945 and has been accredited by the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association since 1949. A professional four-year course leading to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degree was begun with the entering class in September of 1945; the first class graduated in 1949.

  • What is the mission of the institution? The primary mission of the School of Veterinary Medicine is to provide an environment that nurtures and promotes a spirit of active, independent and self-directed learning, teaching, research and service in veterinary medicine and related disciplines.

  • Do they have any special programs? They are the only historically black college or university with a fully accredited College of Veterinary Medicine that offers the Doctoral Degree, and produces over 75% of the African-American veterinarians in the world. They also have many different programs for students and people interested in veterinary medicine. There is the Health Careers Opportunity Program, Summer Enrichment and Reinforcement Program that is designed to improve pre-veterinary trainees, FIRST Club which is a program to help improve the education of 7th and 8th graders from disadvantaged backgrounds, and the ESMAT Club which works with 9th through 12th grade students.

  • What professional development do they offer graduates? The School offers lectures, seminars, and workshops aimed at providing veterinarians, livestock producers, owners of companion and recreational animals and the public in general with new and applied knowledge for the betterment of animals and humans. Faculty are intimately involved in the development and implementation of these programs and serve as presenters and program participants along with selected guest lecturers. As a means of professional development, faculty are also encouraged to make presentations at off-campus educational, research, and community forums on the national and international levels.
