Background Information

  • When was the school founded? The school was founded in 1974 and the first class was admitted in 1977.

  • What is the mission of the institution? The mission of MSU-CVM is to train future veterinarians, educate veterinarians and scientists, and improve quality of life for producers and pet owners. We accomplish this by our continued provision of quality educational experiences, delivery of outstanding professional services and impacting society through research. We are committed to continual advancement of the veterinary profession and abide by the principles of the veterinarian's oath.

  • Do they have any special programs? They have an early entry program that is available to high school seniors as a unique program allowing them to earn pre-acceptance into the CVM program. Students who are accepted into this program begin their undergraduate work at MSU and once they have completed their required courses, remained in good standing, and taken the GRE will be matriculated into the CVM program. They must complete a minimum of 14 credit hours per semester, maintain a 3.35 GPA in all courses (combined, prerequisite, all other courses, and the last 45 semester credits), and document at least 480 hours of work experience in a clinical setting.

  • Do they have any special facilities? They have the College of Veterinary Medicine Library, the CVM Animal Health Center, and Diagnostic Lab.

  • All required coursework must be completed by the end of the spring semester prior to matriculation as the academic year at MSU starts around July 1st for first-year students.- Must have a minimum GPA of 2.8- No grade can be lower than a C- in any required course

  • What is the average class size? 85 

  • What other degrees are offered? They offer a DVM, Veterinary Medical Technology (BS), Graduate Education Programs (MS and PhD), and they have combined DVM-MS and DMV-PhD programs.

  • What are the residency placement options? The MSU veterinary school has various internships and residency programs that have continued to grow over the past decade. At their Animal Health Center they have approximately 11 interns and 24 residents. They also have students matched up with programs around the country through the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program. MSU-CVM has one of the best track records in the nation for matching its graduates with internships and residencies. Some of their residency options are small animal internal medicine, small animal surgery, diagnostic imaging, shelter medicine, equine surgery, theriogenology, anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, anesthesia, neurology, and equine medicine.

  • What is the NAVLE pass rate? 98%

  • What are some student activities? Students at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine have many opportunities for club participation. All clubs and student organizations operate under the umbrella of the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA), to which students must belong in order to participate in other organizations. Some of their organizations include SCAVMA, AABP, AAEP, AAHA, and SCVECCS.

  • What professional development do they offer graduates? They have a MSU database program available for their graduating students that posts job openings, provides many different resources, and resume building.

  • What is the curriculum? MSU has a basic veterinary school curriculum with the first two years being primarily about in the classroom learning, however clinical rotations begin the summer of the third year and each block is 12 weeks long. The fourth year continues on with specific clinical rotations.

  • Do they have a supplemental application? Yes, they have an application that is available on their website and it is due October 2nd. It has a fee of $50 that must be sent to MSU. It is very basic.

  • Do they have interviews? Yes, they have selective interviews that are done on-campus in January and February. There was no further information provided on the website about the interview process. Notifications are then sent out after interviews around late February and early March. Notifications are sent via email and US mail.

  • Are AP credits accepted? Yes, they accept them as long as they appear on official college transcripts.

  • Do they require a pre-professional curriculum? No, they suggest certain majors for early admittance students at MSU, but otherwise the only requirements are those of the classes needed.

  • ​What professional test do they accept? GRE. They only accept scores three years older or less.

Subjective Review Components

- The admissions committee takes many different components into consideration.

- First are the academic qualifications that have been outlined above and the components of the VMCAS application.

- Next they look at the non-academic qualifications where they are looking to find students who will be successful not only in the classroom, but in a clinical setting. They looking for qualities in applicants, such as motivation, self-determination, work habits, integrity, empathy, orientation towards service, uniqueness, maturity, decision making/problem solving skills, leadership, and communication skills.

- They also take the three letters of recommendation and the GRE test scores into consideration.

- After that, applicants are selected for interviews and the final decisions on acceptance are made after that.

 

Tuition and Fees
  • In-state tuition = $18,782

 

  • Out-of-state tuition = $43,982

 

  • Is there an enrollment deposit required? Yes, there is a $500 non-refundable deposit required to hold a spot in the class. It will be put towards tuition upon matriculation.

 

  • Residency status options = No. At the time of application, a candidate’s residency is determined based on information provided in the VMCAS application, as well as by any other documents requested by the Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs of the College. An admitted applicant’s status will not change for his or her entire MSU-CVM veterinary medical educational period.

An example of their scholarships offered to students are the Hugh M. and Kathryn Arant, Sr. Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine which is awarded to a sophomore student who demonstrates academic performance, high achievement, leadership abilities, and financial need.

 

  • Loans - This is going to be the main payment form that you will be using to finance your veterinary education. Make sure to fill out the FAFSA so that you can get certain loans that sometimes provide better benefits.
