Background Information

  • When was the school founded? The first class of veterinary students will be this coming Fall in 2014.

  • What is the mission of the institution? The mission of LMU-CVM is to prepare veterinarians who are committed to the premise that the cornerstone of meaningful existence is service to attain optimal health for people, animals, and our environment.

  • Is it a public or private University? Private

  • Do they have any special programs? At this time they have not started any special programs that I can find. 

  • Do they have any special facilities? LMU-CVM is located on the campus of the Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. They have a large animal teaching and research center (LATRC). They also have a new Math and Science building that has auditoriums, microscopy suites, and over 4,600 square feet of research labs.

  • Accreditation: The Lincoln Memorial University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associates, baccalaureate, master’s, educational specialists, and doctoral degrees. As for the veterinary school, the LMU-CVM was granted a letter of reasonable assurance from the AVMA COE on July 2nd, 2013. This means that the veterinary school is reasonable assured of future accreditation. It is anticipated that with the first Fall 2014 class of veterinary students will receive Provisional Accreditation with full accreditation received in 2018.

  • Students must complete at least 60 semester credits and maintain a minimal GPA of 2.8 or higher in all of the required coursework. They do have a rare except that students not meeting the GPA requirement, but have shown a commitment to academic excellence in the last 2 years of study will be considered on a case by case basis. ​​

  • What are some student activities? Veterinary students have access to the LMU campus amenities, such as on-and-off campus housing, sports arena, an indoor swimming pool, exercise facility, dining hall, ropes course, and library. Since there has not yet been a class there aren’t actually organizations. However, it is anticipated that the following organization will be established with the inaugural class. Student Chapter of American Veterinary Medical Association, Christian Veterinary Fellowship, Equine Practitioners, Feline Practitioners, Theriogenology, Sheltering Vets, and Veterinary Business Management Association, and Veterinary Research Club.

  • What professional development do they offer graduates? The Office of Student Services will offer workshops in resume building, interview strategies, and seminars about benefits, salary expectations, and debt management. They also have the veterinary career center that provides students and graduates with a lot of career help.

  • What academic support programs do they have? LMU-CVM is committed to the development of students on an individual and professional level. The Office of Student Services at LMU-CVM provides student services that include housing, tutoring, career planning as well as student success and development programs.

  • What is the curriculum? The primary focus of the professional curriculum of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is the four-year (8 Semesters), full-time academic and clinical degree program leading to the degree Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). The veterinary curriculum has been designed with the end in mind – to prepare the ideal graduates of tomorrow. As such, the curriculum is designed to be both horizontally and vertically integrated, i.e., as often as possible material taught in a given semester is aligned and considered across courses, while at the same time, conceptual bridges are built toward material to be presented in future semesters.

  • Do they have a supplemental application? Yes, there is an online LMU-CVM supplemental application. It must be completed by October 16th of the application year.

  • Do they have interviews? Yes, they have an interview process for candidates considered for admission. Interviews take place on the LMU campus in Tennessee. The interviews are done with a member of the Admissions Committee and last roughly an hour. The interviews are conducted in a Holistic Manner with the student’s personal qualities, experiences, transcripts, and GRE scores, and communication skills. Two weeks after the interview students will be notified of their acceptance or rejection.

  • Are AP credits accepted? Yes, they are accepted if they are on the college transcripts.

  • Do they require a pre-professional curriculum? No, they only require the courses described.

Subjective Review Components

Applicants 

- Candidates will be selected for admission based on the following aspects:

 

1. Overall grade point average (GPA), Science GPA, GPA in last 2 years of full time study

2. Score on the Graduate Record Examination

3. Matriculation through a program with academic rigor with no less than 50% of the credits required for a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

4. Track record of academic progress and success in a program of study that balanced school, work, and family commitments

5. Leadership skills evidenced by participation in student government or holding office in student clubs and organizations that foster development of communication, collaboration and adaptability.

6. Well-rounded life that demonstrates a judicious balance of academic achievement, community service, and personal interests

7. Knowledge and commitment to the veterinary profession.

 

- Students meeting the criteria for academic potential, professional potential, personal potential, and collaborative potential will be recommended to the Admissions Committee who will invite to qualified candidates for on-campus interviews.

- Students invited to campus will be carefully screened to determine those best qualified for admission to the LMU-CVM. Eighty-five (85) students are admitted to the professional program each year.

  • Is there an enrollment deposit required? No, but you must submit a written acceptance note to Dr. Schadler indicating your acceptance by April 15th.

 

  • Residency status options = they do not allow changing of residency. According to their website residency really makes very little difference. Their tuition is the same and they do not “differentiate between in-state and out of state applicants based on their residency”.

 

​Funding Options​
  • Grants-in-aid - You should apply through the FASFA in order to get any types of grants, loans, or scholarships. Generally grants are not awarded to professional students from the government.

 

  • Fellowships - unable to find any information about fellowships

 

  • Scholarships - LMU-CVM is committed to providing scholarships to a limited number of students each year based on academic qualifications and residency in Appalachian counties in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Details regarding the size of the monetary award, application process, and selection criteria will be available on the LMU-CVM Homepage once they become available.
